Hollywood and its undying love for Defamation

Is Johnny Depp able to beat abuse allegations?

Throughout the many years of Hollywood, there have been many instances where slander or libel things have been done to either hurt or demonetize someone's reputation. The infamous case that will be highlighted today involves Johnny Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard. It was first reported in early 2016 that Amber Heard filed a restraining order against Depp. As she was leaving the court, she said that she had been attacked and had objects thrown at her, resulting in bruising. Soon after, the restraining order was valid, and soon after, they got divorced. Johnny Depp was quick to deny the allegations that were set against him soon. Johnny Depp was in court in 2020, saying libel action was needed. Under FOIA (Freedom of Information Act), defamation falls under Libel, which is why Jonny Depp was going to court. A Sun article posted saying that Jonny Depp was a "wife-beater" Depp was fighting the physical abuse statements saying that they were a "hoax." Unfortunately, Johnny Depp had lost his libel court case against the Sun newspaper in late 2020. In late 2021 Johnny Depp was granted in his proceedings to sue Amber Heard for Defamation regarding a 2018 Washington Post article she wrote talking about surviving domestic abuse. A Fairfax, Virginia Judge, was the one who granted the lawsuit. One of the main claims Depp was making to persuade the Judge's ruling was saying that he had been boycotted in Hollywood since the allegations back in 2016. This was a step in the right direction for Depp, especially after the Judge disregards Heards bid to nullify the defamation suit filed against her. Since the beginning of the case, things have been flipped on its head with definitive evidence such as recordings, photos, and statements proving Depp's innocence. Soon after these were public, Amber Heard lost lead roles in Hollywood movies she was working on at the time. Currently, Johnny Depp is waiting for his defamation lawsuit to be resolved.
