Schema's Within the Media

How your view on media is affected by media

Media is all around us every day, from newspapers, television, music, and notifications for CNN updating us on the latest world news. Subconsciously every individual has predetermined opinions on how they perceive the news and the world around them, called a schema. In terms of media and other aspects of life, individuals use predetermined information to help us understand and take in new information and help us organize information too. Some media is targeted toward the schemas that influence us, affecting society and the different roles each plays. These schemes further build and solidify our dreams, behaviors, and identities, which is scary and fascinating at the same time. Schemas in media can also be used in a bad way. A research film team in Britian found that out of 45,0000 actors over the span of 10 years in the United Kingdom, only 0.5% were black actors. Not seeing black actors or other people or themes in media can lead to a negative perception of what is right and wrong. It was also noted that many of the films that used black actors also portrayed them as criminals leading to develop further negative schemas. This is just a small way that schemas are used in media, good or bad, and how they help us perceive and create new information coming at us in this never-ending media-focused society.
